Thermography FAQs
- 1 What is Infrared Thermography?
- Infrared Thermography is the science of acquisition and analysis of thermal information from non-contact thermal imaging devices.
- 2 What is Heat?
- The amount of heat in an object is the total kinetic energy of the molecules that composes it.
- 3 What is Temperature?
- Temperature is a measure of the average speed of the molecules and atoms that make up the substance.
- 4 What is Convection?
- Convection is a heat transfer mode where a fluid is brought into motion, either by gravity or another force, thereby transferring heat from one place to another.
- 5 What are the Ways That Radiation Can Be Exchanged Between Objects?
-
- Emission – to give off radiation
- Absorption – to take up and retain radiation
- Reflection – to bounce radiation back
- Transmission – to let radiation pass through
- 6 What are the Operating Principles Behind Thermal imaging Cameras?
- The thermal imaging camera converts invisible infrared radiation into a visual image.
- 7 How does Emissivity Effect the Temperature of the Target That We See?
-
- High Emissivity
The apparent temperature will be close to the true temperature of the target.
You Can trust what you see
Low Emissivity
The apparent temperature will be close to the apparent temperature of the surrounding objects
You Cannot trust what you see
- High Emissivity
- 8 In Thermography You Use Isotherms, What Are They?
- The Isotherm replaces certain colors in the scale with a contrasting color. It marks an interval of equal apparent temperature.
- 9 What is Qualitative Thermography?
- Qualitative Thermography relies on analysis of thermal patterns to reveal the existence and locate the position of anomalies.
- 10 What is Quantitative Thermography?
- Quantitative Thermography uses temperature measurement to determine the seriousness of an anomaly, in order to establish repair priorities.
